Signaling for Help

Signaling For Help

How you signal for help depends upon the time of day and weather conditions.

In mountain country, it is very unlikely that an air search will take place at night even with clear weather.

During the day, however, stay alert for the sound of ground or air search parties.

Keep a fire going at all times and add wet or green fuel to create smoke.

Lay your orange cloth out in an open meadow with an SOS or an X written in very large letters in the snow, and use your signal mirror if the sun is shining. Make your X approximately 30 x 50 ft and 3-4 ft wide.

Use your whistle or bang two dead logs together to attract the attention of a ground search party.

Keep your snowmobiles clear of snow so they may be seen more easily.
